Daniel Burgess, a 21-year old New River Community College student and resident of Blacksburg, is one of 30 two-year college students in America to receive a $1,000 Phi Theta Kappa “Leaders of Promise Scholarship.”
“The Leaders of Promise Scholarship funds represent an investment in human potential,” says Rod A. Riseley, Phi Theta Kappa executive director. “Our objective is to provide the resources and programs that will result in the emergence of strong moral servant leaders.” Burgess says being a servant leader “is less about what you are getting, and more about what you are giving; to serve, rather than to be served.” As well as the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship, Burgess is an NRCC Educational Foundation Scholar. He is earning a double major in Information Technology and Computer Graphics & Web Design Specialization. He works the “midnight shift” at the front desk of a Blacksburg hotel. Burgess, a second-year student at New River Community College, is footing the bill for his college education. With scholarships and a full-time job, he’s managing his finances while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. He is an active member of NRCC’s Omega Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa . His parents are Brian and Laurie Burgess of Blacksburg. Photo courtesy of NRCC.
