The Montgomery County School Board appointed Phyllis Albritton to fill the District A seat, which was left vacated after Amy Lythgoe, in a special called meeting Wednesday night.
Albrittion, 69, was selected over three other citizens who had expressed interested in the seat, which covers south and southeast Blacksburg and the northeastern part of the county, by a 5-1 vote. Board member Jamie Bond voted against the appointment. In a public hearing Tuesday night, six people spoke to the board in favor of Albritton, who is a security advisor with Wachovia Securities. Others applying for vacant seat included Karen Myers, Amy Mauldon and Arnold Saari. Albritton will have to run for the seat in the 2008 general election to keep it until 2009, when the unexpired term of Lythgoe would run out. She would than have to run again in 2009 if she wants to serve a full four-year term.
