The 8th Annual Riner Heritage Day, along with the 50th Anniversary of the Riner Volunteer Fire Department will get underway at 10 a.m. this morning and will continue to 3 p.m. in this bustling little community just outside of Christiansburg.

The day-long activities get underway at 10 a.m. with the parade, which starts at Fairview Road and will run along Route 8 to Auburn High School. This year’s grand marshals will be Jon Altizer, Louis Sowers, Kermit Grim, Raymond Millirons and Billy Greear, who are all charters members of the fire department.

This year’s parade will feature the Auburn High School band, antique vehicles, and area fire and rescue squads, along with lots more.

“We are expecting about 40 entrants this year,” said Kelly Brennan, one of the event organizers.

Following the parade, there will be plenty of activities for everyone of every age on the grounds of Auburn High School and the Riner Fire Department.

There will be a children’s pet show starting at 10:30 a.m. From 11:30 to 1:30 there will be children races (sack race, hula-hoop, jump rope, etc.) and games for the youngsters. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded.

The fire department will also be celebrating its 50th Anniversary and will be conducting an open house. There will also be displays of antique firefighting equipment. There will also be activities for the children.

The Riner Museum and the Riner Cannery will also be open for people to browse through.

There will also be plenty of food, vendors, music and lots more taking place to keep festival goers busy.

“We invite everyone out for a day of good family fun,” added Brennan. “There will be something for everyone here.”

The first Riner Heritage Day was held in 1999 to celebrate the cultural and agricultural heritage of the area, with the first parade being held on September 9, 2000.

The event is sponsored by Riner Ruritans, the Riner Branch of the Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center, and the Riner Fire Department.
