Roanoke Police Department Begins Extra Traffic Enforcement

The Roanoke Police Department has begun its increased traffic enforcement in preparation for the holiday season. As a result of the increased enforcement, officers working on November 6, 2007 wrote 109 traffic summonses for various violations. The department is enforcing traffic safety laws with zero tolerance in an effort to decrease crashes as drivers travel during the holiday season. The officers are focusing on DUI, aggressive driving, and safety belt and child safety seat violations.

Roanoke Police Department Investigates Home Invasion

The Roanoke Police Department is investigating a home invasion that occurred on November 6, 2007. Officers responded at 9:53 a.m. to a residence on Marr Street. The victim stated that he woke up to find the suspect in his home.

Parking And Traffic Announcement: A Concert For Virginia Tech Is Tonight PDF Print E-mail

Virginia Tech will host "A Concert for Virginia Tech" this evening beginning at 6 p.m. The traffic impact of this concert on the university community will be especially heavy and the following traffic information will be in effect.

Therefore, the university will take steps to ensure the orderly flow of traffic and minimize impact on our faculty, staff and students. Concert traffic will begin arriving in earnest several hours before the start. Parking lot clearance activities are as follows for the concert:

University Parking Lots Reserved for the Concert. The following parking lots and roadway will not be available for VT parking permit holders to use on the stated dates:
· Chicken Hill Parking Lot (turf portion); Sept. 2-8.
· Stadium Parking Lot; Sept. 2-8.
· West Stadium Parking Lot; Sept. 6.
· Track/Field House Parking Lot; Sept. 6.
· Parking Meters along Alumni Mall (30 min parking only); Sept. 3-5.
· Spring Road (closed to all traffic); Sept. 6.

Parking Instructions for Today (Sept. 6)

Students, Faculty and Staff
Faculty, staff and students who plan to attend "A Concert for Virginia Tech," should please use Blacksburg Transit or walk to the concert on Thursday, Sept. 6. We anticipate traffic and parking lot congestion in the area near Lane Stadium. Do not attempt to park close to the Stadium, since these spaces will already be reserved or occupied. Tailgating (i.e. consumption of alcoholic beverages/open fire grills) will not be allowed Thursday in any university parking lots.
 
General Admission (Public Parking)
Visitors (non Virginia Tech parking permit holders) will be directed to park in the Chicken Hill Parking Lot (turf area), located off Tech Center Drive on the day of the concert. Tailgating (i.e. consumption of alcoholic beverages/open fire grills) will not be allowed in this or any other Virginia Tech parking lots.
 
Directions to Chicken Hill Parking Lot: From I-81, take exit 118. Follow signs to 460 west. Take 460 West around Blacksburg. Turn right onto Southgate Drive. Turn right onto Tech Center Drive. Turn left into the Chicken Hill Parking Lot.

Additionally, beginning at 5 p.m. on Sept. 6 all Virginia Tech parking lots, other than those designed as "24 hour" lots, will become open for general use by the public. The public is encouraged to use the large parking lots off of Prices Fork Road as spaces become available. Parking must be in a valid striped parking space and not along the shoulder of the lot or in roadways.
 
Handicap Parking
Handicap parking spaces will be available in the Stadium Parking Lot. Those vehicles with a valid DMV-issued handicap hang-tag or license plate will be directed to park in the Stadium Parking Lot.

Special Guest Parking
Special Guests will use the Track/Field House Parking Lot. Only vehicles with special event parking passes will be allowed to park in the Track/Field House Parking Lot.

Blacksburg Transit
 
· Blacksburg Transit will run normal bus service on Thursday, September 6.
· Blacksburg Transit will run fare-free service from 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 6 - 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.
· Blacksburg Transit buses, at the end of the concert, will line up in front of Cassell Coliseum (on Washington Street) between 10 and 10:30 p.m. in preparation for running.15 minute bus service on all routes immediately after the concert until 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.

Airport Shuttle
A shuttle van service from the Virginia Tech/Montgomery Executive Airport to the south side of Lane Stadium will operate on an as-needed basis, beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 and ending at midnight in support of aviation use at the airport.

Traffic control for the concert:
· Virginia Tech Police Department will manage the key
· Virginia Tech Police Department will block Spring Road (from Washington Street to the entrance to the Stadium and the Track/Field House Parking Lots) to through traffic on Thursday, Sept 6.
