Happy Hokie Fans Leave The Lyric

The Lyric Theater in downtown Blacksburg seats nearly 500 people and hundreds of Hokie fans turned out for the premiere of the documentary Hokie Nation last night.

The documentary was produced by two Hokie alums, Sean Kotz of the Class of 1988 and Chris Valluzzo of the Class of 1998.  Hokie fans lined up outside the theater waiting on the 7:00 and 9:30 p.m. showings last night.

The documentary, which took two years to complete, chronicles the Virginia Tech Football Team, the Hokie fans, and what happens in Blacksburg on Hokie football game days.  The film focuses on the fans, including their tailgating habits, with the strong sense of family and community that shapes Blacksburg on game days.

The film included interviews of former Hokie greats Bruce Smith, Carroll Dale, and Antonio Freeman to name a few.  There was a piece on the film on “Skipper,” the cannon that the Corps of Cadets fires every game.  There were interviews with the crew and creators also.

The fans all filed out of The Lyric ecstatic over the premiere.  “I thought this film was great,” said Melissa Foutz of Silver Spring, Maryland.  “Me and my husband came down earlier for the game just to see Hokie Nation.  Every Hokie fan should see this movie.”

Virginia Tech alum Brian Smith from Northern Virginia echoed the sentiments.  “I really enjoyed the interviews with the former players,” said Smith.  “It was wonderful to hear the old war stories by the players.”

If you missed the premiere of Hokie Nation, you can still catch matinee showing on Sunday and Monday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day.  A DVD of the documentary will be released on September 15th at the University Bookstore and online at www.hokiemovie.com.
