Montgomery County will hold a public auction at noon on Friday to sell off 20 parcels of land in order to collect delinquent real estate taxes. The sell will be conducted in the board of supervisors meeting room on the second floor of the Montgomery County Government Center located on Roanoke Street in Christiansburg.
According to Richard Shelton, the country treasurer, who identified the parcels, they are unoccupied real estate, as being more than two years delinquent on their taxes, and state law allows the county to seek court approval to sell any real estate that is more than two years delinquent in order to collect back taxes. The back taxes, including penalties and interest, and the county’s costs involved with the auction will be taken off the top of the total amount bid for the parcels, and any existing liens on the properties must also be paid, according to the treasurer. According to the law, any remaining amount must be held in an account for two years. If no legal heirs to the properties show up to claim the money within that time, then the money will go into the general fund portion of the county budget. Shelton went on to say that property owners may redeem the parcels any time prior to the date of the sale by paying the county’s costs to date, the back taxes, and any penalties or interest owed.
