Travelers heading to the annual Hillsville Flea Market and Gun Show during this weekend should be prepared for considerable traffic delays. The town’s popular flea market and gun show is being held today and tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 3.
Thousands of visitors are expected to converge on a one-mile section of Route 58 in Hillsville. As a result, traffic in the area will be extremely congested and will be reduced to a crawl. “If you are coming to Hillsville to enjoy the festivities, expect crowded sidewalks and slow-moving, bumper-to-bumper traffic. Please be considerate and patient and watch out for the many pedestrians you will encounter,” said Bob Beasley, Hillsville Residency Administrator for the Virginia Department of Transportation. VDOT crews will place electronic signs that will be activated Friday, giving drivers instructions for visiting the Flea Market and Gun Show. Message boards at the intersections of routes 52 and 148 at Fancy Gap will instruct motorists entering Hillsville to use Interstate 77 north. For safety reasons, no parking will be permitted in the median on Route 58 from the Hillsville town limits to the interchange with I-77. “No Parking” signs will be posted. Those planning to attend the Flea Market and Gun Show are encouraged to take I-77 and use Exit 14 (Hillsville/Galax). Motorists traveling near Hillsville and not planning to attend the event should follow instructions on signs and message boards, which will give alternate routes around Hillsville. Motorists on I-77 should drive carefully and be prepared for possible congestion around Exit 14, especially during the morning hours. “We’re trying to help folks coming to the flea market arrive as safely and smoothly as possible, but if you’re not coming to the flea market, you might want to avoid the area,” said Beasley.
