Not wanting to wait for the Town of Blacksburg building codes to change, the company that manages the Collegiate Suites Apartment Complex will be installing carbon monoxide detectors in all of their apartments.
According to a news release by University Development Inc. who manages Collegiate Suites for the owners CSB, LLC III of Virginia Beach, Virginia, they are working very close with Town of Blacksburg officials to determine the exact details and timeline of the carbon monoxide leak, which was caused by a faulty valve on a hot water heater. The carbon monoxide detectors will be installed in each individual unit over the coming weeks. The building at 1306 Henry Lane is relatively new, being built in 1999. Building code does not require carbon monoxide detectors in apartment buildings. 25 people were sent to the hospital because of carbon monoxide poisoning on Sunday morning. Five 19-year old sophomores at Virginia Tech remain in the hospital at this time. The end of the release reflects the company’s sadness and concern for the victims and all displaced by the near tragedy. Everyone has been moved to temporary housing until the town investigators are done with their investigation. The company has been involved in Blacksburg for in excess of 20 years and they ended the release by saying, “our thoughts and prayers are with the students who have been affected and their families."
