Michael Vick’s attorney has now said what we all knew from the start. Michael Vick is guilty. Sure, there were those die-hard fans and supporters who continued to support the notion that Vick was being framed and was innocent of the charges, but we all have to admit that we knew the truth from the start. Just like we knew the truth about OJ, we knew the truth here as well.
Vick’s admittance of guilt presents some questions that the Virginia Tech administration, athletic department, the alumni and Hokie fans everywhere have to answer. At what point does the University cut their ties with Michael Vick? There is no better time than the present. The University is currently taking it on the chin in several areas. Bill O’Reilly has been all over the University for booking rapper Nas and has been giving out Dr. Steeger’s email address along with many other ways to contact the University President. A non-profit group filed a complaint against Virginia Tech alleging failure to provide proper communication between the university's police department and the students during the time between the first and second shootings, enabling students to continue to go to classes and insufficiently warning students to take safety measures. If proven, the University could be barred from federal financial aid. And if this is not enough, Michael Vick – the most celebrated athlete in Virginia Tech history – has admitted his guilt in conjunction with a dog fighting ring. It is not going to take very long for the animal activists groups to figure out that Virginia Tech has a hall named for Michael Vick. It won’t be long before they realize that the #7 jersey flies high above Lane Stadium. And it won’t be long before they notice that Frank Beamer continues to soft peddle questions about Michael Vick. And when all of this comes to light, you can expect protests from all directions. The University needs to get this one right – cut the ties with Vick before more problems arise. Michael Vick Hall needs to be renamed. Perhaps it can be renamed in memory of the students and professors who died in the senseless killings back in April. The University has far more reason to remember these people than it does in celebrating Michael Vick – a soon to be felon. And maybe in place of that #7 banner should be a banner for every student and professor killed. They all deserve their own flag flying high over Lane Stadium. And once and for all, Frank Beamer needs to come out and let it be known how much he deplores Michael Vick’s actions. At some point it has to become time that everyone stop blaming Michael Vick’s problems on his inability to surround himself with better people. That’s a bunch of B.S. Michael Vick was a thug growing up, he was a thug while at Virginia Tech and he is a thug today. What has gotten him by is an incredible line of B.S. that makes people believe he is “deep down” a good person. I’m sorry, no “good person” deep down or what, can prove to me that they have one ounce of decency if they are charged with the same things that Vick has been charged with. And what about ESPN over and over and over, remarking at what a role model Michael was to Marcus? Heck, Marcus is starting to look like a choir boy compared to Michael. Marcus apologized for hurting the family name. Michael has forever ruined his family name. Recruiting the Tidewater area might become a little difficult for Beamer and his assistants if they do the right thing and turn their back on Michael Vick. But sometimes it is more important to do the right thing than it is to be right. Virginia Tech is a great University, built on a solid foundation. Michael Vick is a problem at a time the University doesn’t need one more problem. Let’s not wait until another group starts to condemn the University or some enterprising journalist discovers that Vick was involved in dog fighting while enrolled at VT. Be proactive and forever cut the ties with Michael Vick. Guest opinion by Jimmy Ellis
