Two men were electrocuted at the Radford Foundry located at 1605 W. Main St. in Radford early this morning.
According to Radford Fire Department Chief Lee Simpkins, fire and EMS crews responded to the scene at 12:35a.m. after the men allegedly trespassed onto the property with the intent to steal copper wire. Initial reports indicate the men cut into a 12k volt wire that was still energized, resulting in the electrocution. Fire crews used an aerial ladder truck to remove one man from the 50ft. high roof, while the other was able to climb down on his own. Both suffered severe burns over at least 60% of their bodies and were transported via Carilion’s Life-Guard 11 to the DeCamp Burn Center at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville. There is no word on their current condition and names and ages have not been released. The Radford Foundry is owned by Intermet and its parent company, Q Investments out of Fort Worth, TX. It has been closed for operation since 2004. Radford Department of Police continues to investigate the incident as a criminal matter and has no additional information to release at this time. Further details will be provided as they become available.
