Sunday, 08 July 2007
Several town meetings have been announced to discuss whether a large development project proposed to expand the South Main Street Gables shopping center should be approved. The new project proposes to expand the Kroger shopping center from around 110,000 square feet to over 132,000 square feet, in the direction of Country Club Drive, away from Main Street. Ordinance 1450, a measure passed in June, requires development projects in excess of 80,000 square feet to apply for a special use permit before construction can take place.
As announced by the Town of Blacksburg, a neighborhood meeting will be held Monday, July 16 at 7 p.m. in the police department training room of the Blacksburg Police Station, 200 Clay Street. A planning commission work session is scheduled for the next day at 5 p.m., same location, and will be open to the public, but no public comment will be taken. A planning commission public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Roger E. Hedgepeth Chambers room on the second floor of the Blacksburg Municipal Building.

Following final action by the planning commission, a town council public hearing will be scheduled, time and location TBA.
