Roanoke Police Department Begins Extra Traffic Enforcement

The Roanoke Police Department has begun its increased traffic enforcement in preparation for the holiday season. As a result of the increased enforcement, officers working on November 6, 2007 wrote 109 traffic summonses for various violations. The department is enforcing traffic safety laws with zero tolerance in an effort to decrease crashes as drivers travel during the holiday season. The officers are focusing on DUI, aggressive driving, and safety belt and child safety seat violations.

Roanoke Police Department Investigates Home Invasion

The Roanoke Police Department is investigating a home invasion that occurred on November 6, 2007. Officers responded at 9:53 a.m. to a residence on Marr Street. The victim stated that he woke up to find the suspect in his home.

VDOT Road Watch: July 7-13 PDF Print E-mail

The following is a list of highway projects that may affect traffic in the 12-county Salem Transportation District during the next week (July 7-13).  New information is noted by "###".  For statewide information for major roadways, dial 511 or visit www.511Virginia.org.

ROANOKE            

* ROUTE 24 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 24 bridge over I-581 will be repaired. Weather permitting, flaggers may control traffic on the bridge between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sundays.            

 

* HERSHBERGER ROAD BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Hershberger Road bridge over I-581 (near Exit 3) will be repaired. Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns and temporary lane closures. 

 

 ROANOKE COUNTY ###     

* INTERSTATE 81 SHOULDER PAVING – Weather permitting, paving will cause   shoulder and left lane closures on northbound Interstate 81 between mile markers 134 and 136, Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.      ###      * REMOVE ROUTE 419 GUARDRAIL WORK Work is completed.

 

 * ROUTE 601 (HOLLINS ROAD) WIDENING – Work is under way to widen the section of Route 601 (Hollins Road) from the intersection of Route 115 (Plantation Road) to Route 616 (Carlos Drive).  This work includes widening the bridge over Tinker Creek.  The speed limit has been reduced to 35 mph through out the work zone. Periodic lane closures may occur in this work zone.  Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times.  Flaggers will direct traffic.  Estimated completion is October 2007. 

 

* ROUTE 651 (MOUNTAIN VIEW ROAD) IMPROVEMENTS - Reconstruction of a mile of Route 651 (Mountain View Road) from Vinton to just west of Route 1075 (Falling Creek Drive) is under way.   Periodic lane closures may occur in this work zone.  Traffic will be reduced to one lane at various times with flaggers directing traffic. Expect changing traffic patterns.  Estimated completion is November 2007. 

 

* ROUTE 628 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 628 (Woodhaven Road) bridge over I-581 will be repaired.  Weather permitting, flaggers may control traffic on the bridge between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. 

 

* ROUTE 690 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 690 (Poage Valley Road) bridge near Route 221 will be repaired. Motorists should watch for signs and flaggers directing traffic from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.            

 

 * ROUTE 666 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 666 (Bandy Creek Road) bridge in the Back Creek area will be repaired. Motorists should watch for signs and flaggers directing traffic from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.             

 

* ROUTE 639 BRIDGE REPAIRS --- The Route 639 (West River Road) bridge over the Roanoke River will be repaired. Motorists should watch for signs and flaggers directing traffic from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.             

 

* HAMMOND DRIVE AND GIRAD DRIVE CLOSURE – Drainage structure will be installed in the area of Route 1029 (Hammond Drive) and Route 1521 (Girad Drive). The intersection of these roads will be closed for approximately a month.  

 

 BEDFORD COUNTY 

* ROUTE 24 PAVEMENT PATCHING – Weather permitting, crews will be patching pavement on Route 24 in the Smith Mountain Lake area. Flaggers may direct traffic at times. Expect possible delays.  ###     

* ROUTE 501 PAVING – Work is under way to pave the 3.5-mile section of Route 501 between its intersections with Route 761 (Holcomb Rock Road) and Route 672 (Knight Road).Work will be performed on weekdays during daylight hours starting at 7 a.m. each morning.  During paving, Route 501 traffic will be reduced to one lane.   Flaggers and pilot vehicles will be used to control traffic.            

* ROUTE 460 SHOULDER WORK – Weather permitting, work on road shoulders may cause shoulder and possible lane closures on Route 460 in the Irving area.  Watch for possible lane and shoulder closures during daylight hours.  ###     

* ROUTE 460 PIPE REPLACEMENT – The right lane of eastbound Route 460 from Route 689 (Johnson School Road) to just east of Route 690 (Nester Road) will be closed due to a pipe rehabilitation.  The closure will in place daily between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays.  Estimated completion is mid-July.             

 

 * ROUTE 460 UTILITY INSTALLATION – Weather permitting, crews will be installing a cable line along the shoulder of eastbound and westbound Route 460 between the Bedford City line and the Botetourt County line.  In addition, crews will be adding stone on Route 460 in the Irving area. Motorists should watch for possible shoulder closures.             

* ROUTE 811 IMPROVEMENTS – Weather permitting, crews will be improving a 0.5-mile stretch of Route 811 between Route 661 and Route 622. Motorists should watch for lane closures and flaggers directing traffic.

 

 BOTETOURT COUNTY 

###      * REMOVE INTERSTATE 81 SHOULDER PAVING – Work is completed.  

* ROUTE 614 BRIDGE REPAIRS -- The Route 614 (Arcadia Road) bridge over Jennings Creek will be repaired.  The bridge is located near Arcadia.  Weather permitting, flaggers may control traffic on the bridge between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.             

 * ROUTE 651 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 651 (Stoney Battery Creek) will be repaired.  The bridge is located near Troutville.  Weather permitting, flaggers may control traffic on the bridge between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. 

 

* ROUTE 635 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 635 (Beaver Dam Road) bridge over Catawba Creek will be repaired.  Weather permitting, flaggers may control traffic on the bridge between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. 

CARROLL COUNTY            

* ROUTE 94 BRIDGE REPAIRS – Traffic on the Route 94 bridge over Brush Creek is reduced to one lane, and a temporary signal has been installed to control traffic.  The bridge is located between Fries and Ivanhoe.  The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph, and vehicles wider than 9 feet are prohibited.  Drivers need to expect short delays.             

 

* ROUTE 685 BRIDGE REPAIRS – Weather permitting, repair work will be performed on the Route 658 (Baltimore Road) bridge. Motorists should watch for changing traffic patterns and short term lane closures.              *

 ROUTE 733 ROCK EXCAVATION – Weather permitting, crews will be excavating rock along a 0.7-mile section of Route 733 (Millhill Road) starting at Route 635 may cause short-term lane closures during daylight hours.  Traffic will be controlled by flaggers.

 

 CRAIG COUNTY 

 

###      * ROUTE 311 PAVING – Beginning July 9, crews will be paving on Route 311 from the south end of John’s Creek Bridge to just north of Route 602 (Potts Mountain). Work will be performed during daylight hours. Flaggers and a pilot truck will be directing traffic. Motorists should watch for signs and expect delays.             

 

* ROUTE 615 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 615 (Allegheny Avenue) bridge over John’s Creek will be repaired. Motorists should watch for changing traffic patterns and short term lane closures.   

FLOYD COUNTY            

* ROUTE 221 PAVING –Work to pave about 4.5 miles of Route 221 east of Floyd is underway.  Paving will cause short term delays, and motorists should expect lane closures between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Flaggers will control traffic. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic this week. 

 

* ROUTE 648 GRADING – Weather permitting, crews will be grading a 1.1 mile segment of Route 648 at the intersection of Route 610.  Motorists should watch for flaggers directing traffic during daylight hours on weekdays and expect possible delays.            

* ROUTE 735 GRADING – Crews will be grading along Route 735 between Route 864 and Route 750.  Motorists should watch for flaggers directing traffic during daylight hours on weekdays and expect possible delays.  

FRANKLIN COUNTY            

* ROUTE 40 PAVEMENT PATCHING – Beginning Monday, July 9, crews will be patching pavement on a section of Route 40 between the east town limits of Rocky Mount and the Pittsylvania County line. Motorists should watch for short term lane closures and flaggers between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays. Drivers should also be alert to loose patches of gravel and unmarked pavement on Route 40. 

 

GILES COUNTY            

* ROUTE 61 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 61 bridge over Wolf Creek is being repaired.  Flaggers will control traffic during working hours. The bridge is located about four miles east of the Bland County line.  Vehicles wider than nine feet are prohibited.             

 

* ROUTE 663 BRIDGE REPAIRS -- Weather permitting, the Route 663 (Green Valley Road) bridge in Giles County will be repaired. The bridge is located off Route 100 approximately 6 miles from Pearisburg over Big Walker Creek. Work will be performed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Motorists should watch for flaggers directing traffic and expect possible delays on weekdays.             

 

* ROUTE 753 TREE REMOVAL AND DITCHING – Weather permitting, crews will be removing trees and ditching on Route 753. Motorists should watch for flaggers and construction signs.  

 

HENRY COUNTY  

###      * ROUTE 57 AND ROUTE 57 ALTERNATE PAVING – Route 57 and Route 57 Alternate will be reduced to one lane to allow for paving. Work will be performed on Route 57 and Route 57 Alternate between Route 903 (T. B. Stanley Highway) and Route 666 (Trenthill Drive). Drivers should expect daily lane closures.  Flaggers and signs will be put in place during weekdays. 

 

  • Beginning Monday, July 9, as part of the paving operations on Route 57 Alternate, crews will be concentrated at the intersection of Routes 57 Alterntate and Route 903.  Various lane closures and temporary traffic patterns will be in effect for approximately three days.  Traffic will be controlled by Virginia State Police.

All motorists should use caution and are advised to avoid this intersection, if possible.            

* ROUTE 220 BUSINESS BRIDGE REPAIRS – Weather permitting, work to repair the Route 220 Business bridge over the Route 220/58 Bypass will be performed. Motorists should watch for flaggers directing traffic and possible lane closures during daylight hours on weekdays. 

 

MONTGOMERY COUNTY 

###      * INTERSTATE 81 BRIDGE INSPECTION OVER ROUTE 11/460 – Weather permitting, on Sunday, July 8, the I-81 bridge over Route 11/460 in Christiansburg will be inspected.  The bridge is located near mile marker 118.  The inspection will cause lane closures beneath the bridge on Route 11/460 between 7 a.m. and noon.  

###      * REMOVE ROUTE 460 BYPASS LANE CLOSURES –Inspection is completed.  ###     

 

* ROUTE 603 CLOSURE – Beginning Monday, July 9, a section of Route 603 (Den Hill Road) will be closed so pipes that carry Cedar Run beneath the road can be replaced. Route 603 will be closed in the Ellett area, about .2 miles from the intersection with Route 723 (Lusters Gate Road). The section of Route 603 will remain closed from Monday, July 9 until the late afternoon of Saturday, July 14.             

 

* ROUTE 685 BRIDGE REPAIRS – Weather permitting, The Route 685 (Prices Fork Road)  bridge over Stroubles Creek will be repaired. The bridge is located near Route 114. Motorists should watch for signs directing traffic during daylight hours on weekdays. 

 

* ROUTE 652 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 652 (McCoy Road) bridge over Tom’s Creek will be repaired. Motorists should watch for short term lane closures and flaggers directing traffic during daylight hours on weekdays.                        

* INTERSTATE 81 CONDUIT INSTALLATION – Weather permitting, crews will be installing light poles along northbound  and southbound Interstate 81 during daytime hours Monday through Friday between from mile marker 116 to 120.  Work also will take place at Exit 118, on Route 11/460 northbound and southbound, at the Exit 118A and 118B interchanges at Falling Branch.   Motorists should watch for possible daytime lane closures.            

 

* ROUTE 100 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 100 (Cleburne Boulevard) bridge will be repaired. The bridge is over Route 689 and the Norfolk and Southern Railway. Motorists should watch for signs directing traffic on Route 100 during daylight hours on weekdays.            

 

* ROUTE 637 BRIDGE REPAIRS – Two bridges over Route 637 in the Allegheny area of Montgomery County will be repaired. The bridge over Goose Creek and the bridge over the south fork of the Roanoke River on Alleghany Spring Road will be repaired. The bridges are approximately 2 miles apart. Motorists should watch for signs and flaggers during daylight hours. 

 

 PATRICK COUNTY            

* ROUTE 40 BRIDGE REPAIRS – Traffic on the Route 40 bridge over Big Widgeon Creek will be reduced to one lane and a temporary signal is installed to control traffic.  The bridge is located 6.1 miles east of the Franklin County line.  Vehicles wider than 8.5 feet will be prohibited.  Drivers will need to expect short delays.             

* ROUTE 103 BRIDGE REPAIRS – Weather permitting, the Route 103 bridge over Hookers Creek will be repaired.  The bridge is located about 0.5 mile east of Route 773. Traffic across the bridge is reduced to one lane, and a temporary signal has been installed to control traffic.  Vehicles wider than nine feet will be prohibited.              

 

*ROUTE 687 ROAD IMPROVEMENTS – Weather permitting, crews will be making spot improvements to Route 687. Crews will be straightening curves near the Route 787 intersection near Preston. Motorists should watch for flaggers between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. 

 

PULASKI COUNTY            

* INTERSTATE 81 GUARDRAIL IMPROVEMENTS – Weather permitting, crews will repair and improve guardrail along northbound and southbound I-81 from mile marker 99 to mile marker 105. Motorists should watch for daytime right shoulder closures.             

* ROUTE 100 BRIDGE REPAIRS – The Route 100 bridge over Back Creek is being repaired.  The bridge is located about five miles north of Dublin.  Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction. There is a 10’ restriction on the bridge. Weather permitting, flaggers may control traffic on the bridge between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays.            

 

* ROUTE 100 GUARDRAIL MAINTENCE – Crews will be repairing guardrail along Route 100 near the bridge over Back Creek. Motorists should expect short term lane closures in the northbound and southbound lanes. Flaggers will control traffic.
