August Is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month PDF Print E-mail

August is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, and the Radford Fire Department is sponsoring an awareness and protection campaign.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause severe health issues or even death if undetected. A carbon monoxide leak can be caused by malfunctioning or unvented gas appliances, such as charcoal grills, wood stoves, or space heaters. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the flu, including headache, fatigue, and nausea; so misdiagnosis can occur.

The best way to protect yourself and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning is by installing a carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home. The International Association of Fire Chiefs also recommends putting one detector with an audible alarm near any bedrooms. If the alarm on the detector does go off, evacuate immediately and take any members of the family who are experiencing symptoms of poisoning to the hospital.

The Fire Department will be giving away free carbon monoxide detectors to eligible residents starting August 25th. For more information please call the RFD at (540) 731-3617 or stop by the station at 1500 Wadsworth St.
