Lieutenant Governor Makes Stop In Christiansburg PDF Print E-mail

Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling’s “100 Ideas For The Future Of Virginia” initiative program made a stop in Christiansburg Friday afternoon and about 25 citizens turned out to voice their opinions and to offer suggestions in improving the future of Virginia.

“Just because Virginia is a great place today doesn’t mean it will always be a great place,” said Bolling, as he addressed the crowd at the Montgomery County Government Center. “Because the truth of the matter is, we face some challenges in our state today. They are not Republican challenges or Democratic challenges, they are Virginia challenges.”

Bolling went on to explain some of the challenges Virginia faces today. They included public education challenges. “I think we have a pretty good system of public education in most parts of Virginia. Better in some places than others. I do know this, if we want our kids to compete in the global marketplace of the 21st Century against the Chinese, the Koreans and the Indians, we have got to figure out how to go from here to there.”

Another challenge in which the Lt. Governor brought out dealt with Public Safety. “The biggest Public Safety challenge we are facing today is the tremendous increase in gang activity across our state and we are seeing it everywhere. Its not just an urban problem, not just in Fairfax or Richmond, its all across our state.”

Other challenges Virginia is facing include transportation, health care, protecting the environment, reforming government, and the list goes on.

Bolling then went on to explain how you, the citizen, can get involved to help meet these challenges. They included sending your ideas to the Lt. Governors office, by calling, by attending Town Hall Idearaisers or even visiting their website at www.100IdeasVA.com.

Some of the suggestions offered by Friday’s audience dealt with comprehensive land management issues, transportation issues concerning I-81, the lack of health care for some state employees (P14 employees) and the high cost of health insurance for small business owners were just a few of the items discussed.
