The Mayor would read the proclamation and give a copy of it to each player and coach on the team as many happy parents and relatives snapped pictures while smiling brightly.
After the proclamation, the festivities moved outside to the flagpole in front of the Town Hall as the players gathered around on the hot and humid early afternoon.
“As I told them inside, I am a frustrated youth baseball player who never really did much with it, so watching them with their excitement is a wonderful experience,” Mayor Rordam would say. “These young people have created excitement for the whole community and we will all be following them. On behalf of the whole town I just want to congratulate them on a job well done.”
The players all mentioned how it was great to be playing a game they love to play with all their friends. These young kids have been putting in two-a-day practices since late June, fielding hundreds and hundreds of ground balls daily and putting in more work in the batting cage.
Blacksburg will open with Alabama, who has fielded teams that have won the last four Dixie Youth World Series, on Monday August 6th at 4 p.m. in Madison Heights, which is just on the other side of Lynchburg about two hours from Blacksburg. Win or lose they will play on Tuesday as well.
We all congratulate these young boys and wish them well as they hope to bring back the World Series Championship back to Blacksburg in their first appearance ever in the Dixie Youth World Series.
