A large crowd flooded the streets of downtown Blacksburg on Friday and an even larger crowd is expected to attend today, as the Steppin’ Out Street Festival concludes its 27th downtown event.
The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today, and includes music, crafters, lots of food, art and numerous other happenings.
Today’s activities will conclude tonight with the big finale starting at 9 p.m. on the Main Stage featuring The Payback, a 10-piece musical group dedicated to the music of James Brown. “We will have more than 170 vendors from across the United States selling various types of crafts, herbal soaps, wooden furniture, homemade jewelry and lots more,” said Leslie Hager-Smith, Director of Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg. “In addition, our local downtown merchants will also be selling their merchandise along the sidewalks as well.” Some of the vendors include items at the Farmer’s Market, River Hill Glass, American Martial Arts, High Peak Sportswear, Lyric, Cape Fear Pottery, Pet ID, Jimmy Houston Art to name just a few. In addition to finding just about anything under the sun merchandise-wise, there will be plenty of music to please everyone. Some of the groups include About Time, No Strings Attached, Floyd Montgomery Jazz Project, Blacksburg Community Band, Alliens and several other groups will all perform on the Main Stage, which will be located on Henderson Lawn this year.” “The main stage will move to Henderson Lawn, the community stage will move Jackson Street, which is the heart of the festival, and craft vendors will also be added to Main Street,” said Hager-Smith. In addition to music, activities at the Community Performance Stage at Jackson Street and Draper Road include Blacksburg Center for Martial Arts, New Tech Fitness, Kari Kovick Children’s Music, Dance Tech and Sapphire Ballroom Dance are just a few of the groups performing on this stage. On the Acoustic Stage, which is located in the parking lot of the Main Street Post Office, you will find such performances by Jason Byrd, Windfall, Kat Mills, Barrel House Mamas and others. Of course there will also be plenty of food and drinks to please everyone’s taste buds. Items include homemade bakery goodies, sausages, souvlaki, fresh-squeezed frozen lemonade, along with several other items that will curb your appetite or thirst. Other activities will include a giant sand beach in the parking lot of Cabo Fish Taco, a dunking booth, face-painting and street entertainers. The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is free, parking is free and there will be free bus service aboard Blacksburg Transit busses.
