A large crowd turned out for the annual 2007-08 United Way Kick-Off program Wednesday afternoon at the Outback Steakhouse in Christiansburg.
The event, which was emceed by Bill Roth of ISP Sports and who is also the UWMRF spokesperson got the crowd going as he introduced several of the keynote guests in attendance. Brad Greenberg, who is the new men’s basketball coach at Radford University, spoke to the crowd of about 50 attendees. Greenberg spoke about the need for communities and togetherness within the communities. He also spoke about values and building and working as a team. “The United Way has a strong local community involvement here,” said Greenberg. “And that’s a terrific thing.” Dixon Hannah, who is the President of the UWMRF was next up to say a few words to the audience. “This is a great turn out,” said Hannah as he prepared to give the “State of the Organization address, “And, I promise to be brief.” “We have a chance to make a real difference in the lives of the people in our community, as we learn from the aftermath of April 16,” said Hannah. “We will have a lot more people needing our help as the result of this from year’s past.Hannah also talked about the recruiting of new members, bringing new industries on board and the many volunteering opportunities, which are available. The President also thanked the Blacksburg Country Club for hosting the Blacksburg Gives Back Auction and Golf Tournament held on July 4. In addition, he also thanked the staff of the United Way for their diligent work, especially in the last 3 to 4 months. Kymn Davidson-Hamley, the local United Way Executive Director, introduced several of the local agencies, which receive help from the United Way. Some of those agencies included NRV Cares, Child Care Scholarship Fund, Women’s Resource Center of the NRV, American Red Cross, Floyd County Emergency Assistance Program, Community Housing Partners’ Emergency Home Repair program, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, New River Family Shelter, Literacy Volunteers of the NRV, Free Clinic of the New River Valley, Mental Health Association of the NRV and the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad. The United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd community building efforts are focused on generating and providing our community with resources to build support for local human needs. The local efforts include providing administrative, technical and financial support to local health and human service programs and/or organizations that provide services in the following focus areas: Providing access to physical and mental health care; assisting children and families in crisis; meeting basic emergency needs; helping local youth development for successful futures; empowering disabled children and adults; and providing emergency care and training. Following the luncheon, several door prizes were awarded.
