The AARP Voter Express Van made one of its many stops in Blacksburg on Tuesday, as continues to travel across Virginia to provide free information on election issues to Virginians 50 and older.
The van made stops at the Blacksburg Community Center yesterday morning and at the Blacksburg Kroger’s during the afternoon. On Monday, they visited the Warm Hearth Village. Today (Wednesday) the van will visit the Wheatland Retirement Community in Christiansburg from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and will then travel to Custom Catering in Blacksburg from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Voter Express Van will make its final stop in the area at the Blacksburg Farmers Market from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., also on Wednesday. “The purpose of the Voter Express Van is to promote AARP and to promote what AARP stands for, which is a better life for all Americans, not just seniors,” said Ben Crawford, a member of the Blacksburg AARP, as well as the State Coordinator for Communications and training. The van, which will travel 10,000 miles before the Nov. 6 election in which Virginians will elect all 140 members of the general assembly. “We think every citizen should vote and we think that every citizen should be informed as much as possible on the key issues facing not only seniors, but everyone,” added Crawford. Some of the key issues for the AARP in the Virginia 2007 election include Long-Term Care Services, Health Care Quality, Predatory Lending and Transportation issues.
