Roanoke Police Department Begins Extra Traffic Enforcement

The Roanoke Police Department has begun its increased traffic enforcement in preparation for the holiday season. As a result of the increased enforcement, officers working on November 6, 2007 wrote 109 traffic summonses for various violations. The department is enforcing traffic safety laws with zero tolerance in an effort to decrease crashes as drivers travel during the holiday season. The officers are focusing on DUI, aggressive driving, and safety belt and child safety seat violations.

Roanoke Police Department Investigates Home Invasion

The Roanoke Police Department is investigating a home invasion that occurred on November 6, 2007. Officers responded at 9:53 a.m. to a residence on Marr Street. The victim stated that he woke up to find the suspect in his home.

Blacksburg Presents 25th Anniversary Civic Beautification Awards PDF Print E-mail

The Town of Blacksburg and the Townscape Committee sponsored the 25th Anniversary Civic Beatification Awards Ceremony recently.  The Civic Beautification Awards are given annually to recognize landscapes and/or architectural improvements that enhance the appearance of the Town of Blacksburg.  This year there were four categories for Civic Beautification Awards.  

25th Anniversary Civic Beautification Awards are for a property that merits special recognition in celebration of Civic Beautification in Blacksburg during the past 25 years.   The winners are:

To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Civic Beatification Awards, three different projects were announced.   First, the 25th Anniversary Commemorative Poster, created by Terri Fisher, was unveiled to the public for the first time.   Second, the Townscape Committee and the Town of Blacksburg announced plans to restore the iris gardens at the Price House and Garden Park in honor of the Civic Beautification Awards program.  Third, the Landscape Architecture 2016- Second Year Design Studio at Virginia Tech displayed their work illustrating potential Civic Beautification projects that can continue the spirit of the Civic Beautification Awards program.
 
The 2007 Civic Beatification Award Judges were Scott Gartner, a professor with the School of Architecture plus Design at Virginia Tech; Elizabeth Gilboy, Director of the Community Design Assistance Center; and Anne Robinson, a member of the Southside Garden Club and a State Flower Show judge.
 
Mayor Ron Rordam presented the certificates to the winners with the assistance of the Townscape Committee members.  A reception followed the ceremony with flowers by Karen Handel at Best Wishes and catering by Marie Paget.
 
The 25th Anniversary Civic Beatification Award Ceremony was videotaped and can be viewed on WTOB Tuesday at 10 a.m., Thursday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 5 p.m.  For more information regarding the Civic Beautification Awards, please contact Karen Drake, Town Comprehensive Planner at (540) 951-4446.

More than $110,000 in clinical research grants have been awarded to six principal investigators at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM) at Virginia Tech through the 2007-08 distribution of Veterinary Memorial Fund research grants.

 
Tech's College Of Engineering Receives $1 Million Computing Technology Grant

A $1 million grant of Fujitsu technology and services to Virginia Tech's College of Engineering will assist in the college's creation of "digital opportunities" for underserved students, as well as pre-college students interested in studying math, science or engineering at Virginia Tech.
