A former Virginia Tech student, who struck a crowd of people on a downtown Blacksburg sidewalk in June, has now been charged with three felonies as a result of the accident.
Mary Elizabeth Bowen, 20, of Winchester, has been charged with three counts of maiming while driving under the influence. She was charged following the June 16 accident with driving under the influence. According to court documents, Bowen was operating a Toyota RAV 4, when she was traveling North on Main Street at about 2 a.m. Bowen, who admitted she was text messaging while driving, swerved onto the sidewalk in front of Big Al’s Grille and Sports Bar and struck eight people. The eight were treated at area hospitals and have since been released. On the night of the accident, Bowen, who had just completed her sophomore year at Va. Tech had a blood-alcohol level of .20 percent. Bowen, who is out on bond, is scheduled to appear in December for a preliminary hearing on the maiming charges and trial for the DUI charges.
