Two people have been charged in connection with a triple fatality during the Labor Day weekend in Carroll County, which killed a teenager from Floyd County.

Virginia State Police and Carroll County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Gregory Goad, made the announcement last Tuesday evening in regard to the Sept. 2 accident in Cana.

In that accident, Allison Rebecca Turman, 14, of Willis was killed. Turman had just entered the ninth grade at Floyd County High School.

A 15-year-old female from Cana, who was the driver, was charged with reckless driving, driving without a valid license and transporting three people under the age of 16 in the back of a pickup truck. Because the teenage female is being tried in juvenile court, her name was not released.

State Police are continuing their search for the second individual, who faces charges related to the crash.

Michael Shane Scales, 18, of Mount Airy, N.C., faces charges of allowing a vehicle under his control to be driven by an unlicensed driver, which is a Class 2 misdemeanor, and for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class 1 misdemeanor.

According to the state police, despite attempts to work with Scales, he has refused to cooperate and turn himself in to authorities.

“If we cannot get Mr. Scales to surrender to us, the Commonwealth’s Attorney has indicated that he will amend the arrest warrant to authorized extradition from North Carolina if needed,” said Virginia State Police Sgt. Mike Conroy, Wytheville Division Public Information Officer.

No additional charges are pending at this time. The case still remains under investigation.
