The Blacksburg Police Department, along with the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s Office, are continuing their investigation into what caused the death of a toddler late Friday afternoon in Blacksburg.
According to police, a child younger than 2-years-old was found dead at around 5 p.m. Friday in the mother’s vehicle in the 300 block of North Knollwood Drive near the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center. Sources have told EverythingNRV.com that the incident occurred at the Rainbow Riders Pre School, which is located at 307 North Knollwood Drive. According to the sources, school officials called the parents of students enrolled at the school and told them that the mother, who’s name was not being given, had driven to work with the child in the backseat, and forgot to come to the school. The mother had parked her call all day, and did not realized she had left the child in the back. She did not discover the child until she went to the pre-school to pick up the child. When contacted on Tuesday concerning this incident, Kristi Snyder, who is with the school, sent an email to us. The email read, “I’m sure that you have received the statement from Blacksburg Police Department this afternoon. I hope that this is helpful. We are grieving with this family.” The following statement was released by the Blacksburg Police Department Tuesday afternoon. “On Friday afternoon, the mother found her child unresponsive in her car. She brought the child into Rainbow Riders for help. The staff quickly responded, called 911 and initiated CPR. The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The child, although enrolled, had not attended Rainbow Riders that particular day.” Police have yet to release the identity of the child or the mother and were unsure if the names would be released. It is also unknown at this time if any charges will be filed as a result of this incident.
