The City of Radford is pleased to announce it will be presented with the 2007 Virginia Municipal League (VML) Achievement Award for local governments serving communities with a population between 10,001-35,000 at VML’s upcoming conference.
Radford has been recognized for the Individual Development Accounts (IDA) program for low-to-moderate income individuals and families. The program, which is a collaborative effort between Beans and Rice, Radford Department of Social Services, the New Enterprises Fund, and the City, seeks to set goals, grow savings, and establish credit for participants. To date, 54 families have opened accounts in the program, and 72 have completed financial literacy workshops. City Manager Tony Cox says, “We are proud of this distinction because it showcases that when diverse organizations come together, good things happen.” The Virginia Municipal League Achievement Awards competition is conducted annually to encourage and recognize excellence and innovation in Virginia local government. It includes five categories based on population so that local governments compete with other local government of comparable size. The Virginia Municipal League is a statewide, nonprofit, nonpartisan association of city, town and county governments established in 1905 to improve and assist local governments through legislative advocacy, research, education and other services. The membership includes 39 cities, 157 towns and 12 counties. The awards will be presented on Oct. 16th during a banquet at VML’s 102nd Annual Conference in James City County.
