Celebrating a 50th anniversary is a milestone nowadays and the citizens of Riner can be proud of that fact, as its local volunteer fire department celebrated its half of a century existence Saturday with a open house. The Riner Volunteer Fire Department received its charter membership in September of 1957 and has been providing continious fire coverage to a 98 square-mile area of Montgomery County ever since. “We have been here for fifty years and we hope to provide our service to our citizens for another 50 years,” said Chief Mike Moles. The 35-member department answers an average to 125 to 150 calls per year. In addition to answering calls for help, the members spend numerous hours training to fine-tune their skills. They also spend a lot of time conducting educational classes to area youngsters through events at schools and tours of the fire department. “If we can save just one life through educating our citizens, its worth it,” said Moles. “One of our biggest projects is making sure that all of our citizens have a fire detector in their residence and it is in working order.” During Saturday’s open house, people were seen looking through the many old scrapbooks, which were on display showing the history of the department. Many parents were asking questions, while their children were more interested in checking out the big bright red fire engines. One of the biggest exhibits on hand was the educational smoke trailer from the Christiansburg Fire Department. Many people, young and old, were seen going through the smoke-filled trailer to see what would be like inside a real fire.“It’s smoky in here,” said one young girl. Her friend echoed the same thoughts. “We want the people to know that we are here for them,” added Moles. “However, we hope they will never need our services.” If you are interested in learning more about the Riner Volunteer Fire Department, you can call them at 382-6865. During the Mexican Revolution, Zapata led the Liberation Army of the South, whose slogan "Land and Liberty" represented its goal of repossessing the indigenous Mexican lands taken by the Spanish. Though Zapata's family lived comfortably on their own land, he was a born leader who keenly felt the injustices suffered by his people. Zapata's soldiers, mainly peasants recruited from plantations and villages, occupied Mexico City three times between 1914 and 1915. How did Zapata die?
