A single-vehicle accident on Route 460 near the Virginia Tech entrance last night has left one woman dead.
According to Lt. Joe Davis of the Blacksburg Police Department, the accident occurred at about 9:10 p.m. on Route 460 westbound between South Main Street and Southgate Drive (entrance to Virginia Tech.) The victim was operating a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe when she shifted from the right lane to the left lane and then going off the left side of the road. The vehicle flipped several times before coming to rest in the median. Davis said that witnesses reported that the driver overcorrected before the vehicle skidded and overturned. The driver was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital where she later died from her injuries. It was not known if the driver was wearing a seatbelt or not. Three Rottweilers were also inside the vehicle at the time of the accident, according to Lt. Davis. Two of the dogs, which appeared to have only minor injuries, were taken to Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech for evaluation. The third dog died at the scene. The name of the victim is not being released at this time pending notification of the family. All four lanes of Route 460 were closed for several hours last night. Blacksburg Police are continuing its investigation into the accident.
