There were plenty of activities for the young, and the young at heart, as a large crowd turned out Saturday for the 8th annual Riner Heritage Day.
Things got kicked off with a parade, which featured more than 40 units, and lasted about a half-hour along Route 8 near the Auburn High School. This year’s parade featured the Auburn High School Marching Eagles Band, lots of antique vehicles, fire and rescue vehicles, horses/riders, lots of politicians and even a couple of protesters. “We kicked it off with big ole parade,” said Kelly Brennan, one of the event organizers with the Riner Ruritan Club. “This was the best parade we ever had. It was real successful.” Following the parade, the festival goers worked their way to the many events going on, which included face painting by the Auburn Middle School FBLA, a dog show, pony rides, buggy rides, children games and activities, music, lots of hand-shaking from the politicians and plenty of good old food. One of the biggest hits of the event was the homemade ice cream. With temperatures hovering in the upper 80s, people flocked to the ice cream booth to get cooled down. In addition to several different vendors being on hand, the Riner Museum and Community Cannery were also open for visitors.“Everyone is having fun and they all seemed to be enjoying themselves,” added Brennan. “We have a good crowd here and lots of kids. In fact, it’s the most kids I’ve ever seen here and that’s a good thing.” In addition to the annual Riner Heritage Day, the Riner Volunteer Fire Department was also having an open house to celebrate its 50th Anniversary.
